OVOV AZ Executive Director Sena Mohammed on SB 1011: “Our state legislators were elected to make our lives easier, not make it harder for Arizonans to vote”

January 15, 2025

Earlier this week, Arizona State Sen. Warren Petersen introduced SB 1011, a bill that would require Arizona voters to submit early ballots at voting locations by 7:00 p.m. on the Friday before election day, rather than on election day. Ahead of the Senate hearing for SB 1011 on Jan. 15, Our Voice, Our Vote Arizona Executive Director Sena Mohammed released the following press statement:

“Our state legislators were elected to make our lives easier, not make it harder for Arizonans to vote. SB 1011 is a voter suppression bill that takes away our freedom to submit early ballots on election day, making our elections less free and less fair.

“This is a bipartisan issue that should be opposed by all our legislators regardless of party affiliation — Republicans, Democrats, and Independents all rely on the option to turn in their ballots on election day. To put it in perspective, between 75% and 80% of Arizona voters cast early ballots every election cycle, and in the 2024 election roughly 1 in 10 Arizonans turned in their ballots on election day.

“SB 1011 is a power grab by a small group of legislators who want to make it harder for Arizonans to have a voice. At Our Voice, Our Vote Arizona, we’re committed to making sure every person in Arizona has a voice, has a say, and has representation in our government, and that’s why we urge our legislators to vote NO on SB 1011.”
